Mega Houndoom Pokémon Champions Guide
A TierSun-team special attacker
Mega Houndoom is a sun-team specialist. Solar Power gives a 50% Special Attack boost while sun is up, on top of the Mega's already-strong 140 Special Attack. Heat Wave hits both opposing slots and abuses the boost on every cast.

Modest plus 32 SP into Special Attack hits 416 base under Solar Power in sun. Heat Wave is the spread STAB that defines Mega Houndoom's value. Dark Pulse covers Psychic-types, Solar Beam answers bulky Water-types, and Protect lets your sun setter operate.
Generate builds for Mega Houndoom →Why it works
Solar Power adds another 1.5x multiplier on top of the Mega's 140 Special Attack. Heat Wave with sun damage and Solar Power becomes the highest-damage spread move available, hitting both opposing slots for 95 BP plus stacking modifiers.
Common mistakes
- Running Mega Houndoom without sun support. The Solar Power boost is the entire reason to bring this Pokémon. Without sun, Mega Charizard Y is a strictly better Fire attacker.
- Forgetting Solar Power costs HP. Mega Houndoom loses 1/8 HP per turn under sun. Plan your switches around the chip damage.
- Locking Solar Beam into a Tyranitar lead. Sand Stream cancels sun, dropping Solar Beam to a one-turn charge move and losing the Solar Power boost.
Tips
- Lead Mega Houndoom alongside a Drought setter. Sun goes up turn one, and Heat Wave fires turn two with the full boost stack.
- Solar Beam works without a charge turn under sun, which is what makes it usable in Doubles. Without sun, it is unplayable in this format.
- Save Mega evolution for the turn sun goes up. Base Houndoom's 95 Speed is fine to set up the play.
