Mega Gyarados Pokémon Champions Guide
A TierSetup sweeper, ability breaker
Mega Gyarados is a setup sweeper with a built-in answer to defensive abilities. Mold Breaker ignores Multiscale, Sturdy, and Levitate, which removes the most common ways opponents stall out a Dragon Dance sweep.

Adamant maxes the post-Mega 155 Attack. Dragon Dance turns the slow 81 Speed into a sweep tier. Waterfall is the reliable STAB hammer, Crunch handles Psychic-types and ignores Levitate via Mold Breaker, and Protect buys the setup turn.
Generate builds for Mega Gyarados →Why it works
Mold Breaker bypasses every defensive ability in the format, including Multiscale Dragonite which is the most common way opposing teams check setup. Dragon Dance plus Waterfall under rain from a Pelipper partner deals OHKO damage to almost every non-resist after one boost.
Common mistakes
- Trying to sweep without Dragon Dance. Base 81 Speed loses to too many threats. Always set up at least one Dance before committing.
- Setting up against a Whimsicott. Moonblast plus Encore locks Mega Gyarados into Dragon Dance and ends the sweep.
- Forgetting Mega Gyarados loses Intimidate when it Megas. The Mold Breaker activates after Mega Evolution, so the first turn switch-in does not get the Attack drop.
Tips
- Lead Mega Gyarados behind Pelipper. Drizzle plus Waterfall under rain plus one Dragon Dance is most opponents' nightmare scenario.
- Use the base Intimidate turn to safely set up. Switch into a physical attacker, drop Attack, then Mega and Dance the next turn.
- Crunch with Mold Breaker hits Levitate Rotom-Wash for full damage, removing one of Mega Gyarados's traditional checks.
