Mega Greninja Pokémon Champions Guide
A TierMixed attacker, priority pressure
Mega Greninja is the format's most flexible offensive Pokémon. Protean changes its type to match every move it uses, giving STAB on every attack. Water Shuriken is a multi-hit priority move that punishes Focus Sash leads and revenge kills weakened Pokémon.

Naive with split offensive investment lets Mega Greninja fire mixed coverage without locking into one attacking stat. Water Shuriken is priority and breaks Focus Sash, Dark Pulse handles Psychic-types, Ice Beam covers Dragons and Grass, Gunk Shot answers Fairies.
Generate builds for Mega Greninja →Why it works
Protean STAB on every move means coverage and damage are not a tradeoff. Water Shuriken hits twice to five times with priority, which is the most reliable way to break Focus Sash leads in the format. 142 Speed outpaces almost every offensive Pokémon outside Mega Alakazam.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting Protean only triggers once per turn. The first move sets the type. The second move does not change it.
- Leading Mega Greninja into Tyranitar without backup. Sand Stream chip plus Stone Edge ends the matchup quickly.
- Using Water Shuriken when Hydro Pump or Surf would land. Priority is great, but the base power is low and the multi-hits do not stack STAB cleanly.
Tips
- Pair Mega Greninja with Pelipper for Drizzle support. Water Shuriken under rain becomes one of the strongest priority moves in the format.
- Gunk Shot has 80% accuracy. Save it for matches where you need Fairy coverage and can afford the miss.
- Switch in on Intimidate from Incineroar to soak the Attack drop on a turn you plan to fire special moves.
