Mega Alakazam is the format's premier glass-cannon special attacker. 175 Special Attack and 150 Speed mean it outpaces almost everything that is not Choice Scarf, and Trace lets it copy the opposing Pokémon's ability for free utility every match.

Why it works
Trace copies whatever ability is in front of it, which is free value almost every match. Drought, Intimidate, Drizzle, all flip into your favor on entry. The 175 Special Attack stat is the highest legal in the format outside of Choice Specs setups, and the speed tier means you can fire Psychic before most opposing pivots get the chance.
Common mistakes
- Leaving Mega Alakazam exposed without redirection. Its 55/65/105 bulk is the lowest in the A tier. One unboosted hit will OHKO it.
- Spamming Psychic into a Dark-type slot. Sucker Punch from Kingambit and Dire Claw from Sneasler both threaten OHKOs.
- Mega Evolving on the wrong turn. Trace activates on the turn you Mega, so timing the Mega when the opposing ability is most valuable matters.
Tips
- Lead Mega Alakazam with Whimsicott or Indeedee. Follow Me and Rage Powder lock the opposing target onto the redirector while Alakazam fires.
- Focus Blast accuracy is 70%. Plan for the miss and pair Mega Alakazam with a follow-up special attacker.
- Trace plus Drought from a Charizard Y on the field gives Mega Alakazam an immediate Special Attack boost on top of its base stat.
